Abstract
Patients with nasal turbinate dysfunction who have not responded to conservative treatment will have undergone surgical therapy. In 105 patients with allergic rhinitis or chronic hypertrophic rhinitis, the inferior turbinates were ablated using a
diode
laser equipped with specially-designed handpiece and suction tip under local anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. After 6 months of follow-up period, we analyzed the subjective symptoms, nasal airway resistance with a rhinomanometer, olfaction
by
the
buthanol threshold test and nasal mucociliary transit time by the saccharin transit time. There were significant improvements in sneezing for allergic rhinitis and nasal obstruction for chronic hypertrophic rhinitis, and active anterior
rhinomanometry
showed significant decrease in nasal airway resistance after diode laser ablation of the inferior turbinate(p<0.05). These results suggest that ablation of the inferior turbinate with a diode laser can be an effective treatment modality for the
patients
with refractory allergic rhinitis or chronic hypertrophic rhinitis.
